In Memoriam: Cory Taylor (1965–2022)

Filmmaker, Humanitarian, Co-Founder of Agora Productions

On March 4, 2022, our dear friend and Agora Productions co-founder Cory Taylor passed away after a courageous ten-year battle with multiple myeloma. His passing marked the loss of an extraordinary filmmaker and human being—someone whose life was rooted in justice and defined by a profound sense of moral responsibility to give back through his art.

Cory was a Primetime Emmy Award-winning director, writer, and editor whose career spanned more than three decades. His films were not only powerful works of storytelling, they were acts of conscience. Whether capturing the political struggles of Eastern Europe in The Power of the Powerless or challenging official narratives in JFK: A President Betrayed, Cory used film to illuminate truth and elevate the human spirit. His work also received strong critical recognition. Oliver Stone called JFK – A President Betrayed “brilliant.” The Hollywood Reporter described it as “an excellent example of cinematic scholarship.” The Pravda Cultura News in Slovakia called The Power of the Powerless “Especially important for young Americans,” while 52nd City Media called it “A potent doc about the power of humanity.”

Throughout his career, Cory used storytelling to amplify the voices of people who are often overlooked or silenced. His early work at National Geographic earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations, and his later projects were broadcast on PBS, Al Jazeera, OWN, NHK, and numerous other global platforms. Even while battling cancer, he remained deeply engaged in his work. During his final years, he authored How Hitler Was Made, a timely investigation into the roots of authoritarianism, and edited Oleg Vidov, which went on to win Best Documentary at the Crystal Palace International Film Festival. He also began developing a new Agora production, now titled Jack and Nikita: My Adversary, My Partner, a visionary film project that we are proud to continue in his memory.

Cory was more than a filmmaker. He was a builder of ideas and a believer in the power of education. He co-founded Agora Productions to create stories that inspire understanding and dialogue across racial, cultural, and religious boundaries. He also dreamed of expanding his father’s Arete West program, which had profoundly impacted young people in the 1970s and 80s, including himself. That dream has now become Agora’s Arete Youth Academy, and Cory’s voice and values live on in every student, every journey, and every lesson we share.

To those of us who knew him, Cory was not only brilliant—he was warm, courageous, and unwavering in his dedication to others. He saw every story as a chance to connect, every film as a chance to serve. Even in illness, he lived with purpose, generosity, and strength.

Cory will always remain a part of the spirit of Agora Productions and Arete Youth Academy. His legacy continues to guide us—reminding us to create boldly, live justly, and lead with heart.
